General description
The UCL MPhil/PhD trains economists to conduct research of high academic merit and to make original contributions to the subject. Students are initially registered for the MPhil degree. They are transferred to the PhD degree with retrospective effect if they show a capacity for original work. For both degrees the minimum length of the programme is two years for full-time students and three years for part-time students.
Economists trained in the UCL doctoral programme are equipped for work at the highest professional level in academic research and teaching, in the research departments of major commercial and government enterprises and in international organisations. Recent graduates of the programme have obtained posts in leading universities and research centres (such as Princeton, Stanford, UCLA, University of Wisconsin, British Columbia, Oxford, Stockholm, RAND, Arizona, Rochester).
